Health Informatics (Graduate Degree)

Graduate program in healthcare informatics starts October 18 Classes to be held at BLI

This fall, the BJC Center for LifeLong Learning (CLL) will begin offering a master's degree program in health informatics in partnership with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). The program, which will provide skills and perspective in planning, designing, implementing and using information technologies, is designed for clinical employees with bachelor's degrees who have technology-based responsibilities or who have interest in moving their careers in that direction.

“The job market for clinically-trained health informatics professionals is very strong," says JoAnn Shaw, BJC vice president and chief learning officer. “We've partnered with SIUE to offer an excellent, onsite program that will help address our own expanding need for informatics professionals.”

According to Roger Maclean, SIUE executive director of educational outreach, the interdisciplinary team that helped develop the program included experts from nursing, pharmacy, business and computer science. “The partnership planning has led to a degree program that will help BJC employees balance the clinical and information technology processes that can improve patient care.”

Lee Ann Higginbotham, BJH rehab department clinical specialist of information systems, knows firsthand the need for technology skills among clinicians. “If electronic health records systems are going to work, we need people who are strong in both clinical skills and information technology. We need to learn how to use computers to enhance patient care and better serve our staff. As we move forward, people will have to develop their IT skills.”

The rapid pace of change in the healthcare industry has created a definite and growing need for clinical professionals who are trained to create, manage, maintain and analyze health information data. “Over the past nine months, the CLL has worked with a BJC advisory team and SIUE to design a premier graduate program that combines the specific information technology needs of healthcare professionals with the professional expertise of the faculty at SIUE,” says Gary Stocker, CLL learning partnerships manager.

The CLL and SIUE will host information sessions by web conference. Dates and times are listed below and posted at www.bjclearn.com and in the BJC HealthCare Online Learning Center (Cornerstone). Employees in nursing, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy, HIM and other clinical areas are invited to learn more about the program.

Classes begin Oct. 18 and will meet from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Mondays at the BJC Learning Institute (BLI). Employees who pursue the program are eligible for tuition assistance through BJC HealthCare.
